How do you become a donor?

You first need to apply as a candidate donor at the Universitair Ziekenhuis Brussel in Jette.You need to have your identity card and your SIS card (Social Information System Card) with you.

Prior to your acceptance as a donor you are subjected to a number of tests. First the difficult bit: you need to abstain for a couple of days, so no ejaculating. A sterile container will be given to you at the sperm bank to collect the semen. A private room will be made available where you can 'do what you need to do'. It's important to collect all the sperm in the container: if you didn't collect all the sperm, please notify this when you hand over your sample.

A number of tests are carried out in the laboratory to check whether your semen meets all the requirements. The selection criteria are severe, for instance concerning the freezability of sperm.
A week later you get the results. If the results are good you need to provide a second sample (after the necessary abstention) which will also be examined. Again a week later you get the result.
If your semen passes the test again, you need to have a blood test followed by a short medical examination and an interview. The lab examines the blood sample and if it shows you to be healthy a decision is made as to whether you can become a sperm donor.
If so, heartfelt... congratulations.

How is semen donated?

You then go to the sperm bank where a private, enclosed room will be at your disposal. Here you need to masturbate and collect all the semen in a sterile container. You hand over the sample, and that's it.
Every three months a new blood sample is taken. Simply a matter of making sure you are still healthy.
